Our Journey continues:
INDIANA - August 2012
Doll Factory – Indiana
Through the homeschooling website mummy found another fantastic factory tour – a tour through the last remaining doll factory in the USA! Virginia Taylor, a very well known artist and doll maker had set up this factory some 30 years ago and while all of her doll making friends ‘bit the bullet’ and relocated their manufacturing businesses to China – she was determined to remain in the USA.
When we arrived we found out that they no longer run factory tours but it only took us 3 1/2 minutes to persuade them otherwise. A lovely lady by the name of Vicky, has been working there for the last 23 years decided she would show us around herself. And boy, was it fun!
She showed us the back rooms where the molds are made. Having seen molds being made in Santa Fe, we had some appreciation for all the work that went into making a doll.
Miss Vicky then showed us how the dolls get painted by inserting them into the special metal molds and spray painting each part separately. All the eyebrows and eyelashes get painted by hand by Miss Virginia Taylor, the artist herself.
And we got to play around with some. Here Miss Susan (the wardrobe Design and Manufacturing Manager) joined us for a bit of eye-popping fun.
Miss Susan (from the wardrobe) also showed us all the wonderful outfits that have been designed and made for the girls. They were stunning!
But the most hilarious part of our visit was when Miss Vicky played us one of the voice boxes, which get inserted into ‘The Wicked Witch’, a doll they made in their Wizard of Oz series. She was the actual human who put her voice on it. It was hysterical! We just loved it!
We finished our tour with a look through the shop. We all marveled at the beautiful dolls that came out of this factory. A lot of them were being packed up and ready to be sent to different doll collectors from all over the world. We are hoping one of them will make it down to our door one day....
Santa, please?
We also got to meet the artist’s husband, who is in charge of the mold making. Unfortunately Virginia Taylor couldn’t come and meet with us as she just got out of a day surgery and was still dizzy from the medication but they all said she would’ve loved to have met us.
That night as we drove through the late hours, we decided to pull up at the side of the road for some rest. As we were almost at our destination (a dairy farm we wanted to visit), which was pretty much in the middle of nowhere, we looked for a little pull out. By then the roads we pretty much pitch black. We somehow found a little space in an open field and so we decided this would be our stop for the night. Out of the way in a bean-field county.
In the morning about 6am (since we past a few time zones in the last few days it felt like 3am), mummy woke us up and told us not to panic but quickly hop into the car. We found out within seconds there was a massive storm heading our way. The wind picked up so much it was rocking our caravan viscously and the sky was making it’s own fireworks. We could see the lighting hitting the ground in the distance. And as we happened to be parked in the middle of small plants RIGHT next to a huge pole (which have been put there to catch lightning), we decided we needed to do a runner. And FAST!
We were in a car within seconds and daddy drove us out of there. 20 miles down the highway we found a truck stop and so we snuggled in between two massive trucks. As the winds came across, we hardly felt any rocking. Protected by those massive semi-trailers, we fell asleep to the nice humming of diesel engines.
Today we went to an amazing Diary Farm – in fact, the biggest diary farm in the USA. It comprises of 10 separate farms, each one milking approx. 2,800 cows, three times a day!
And wow, what an incredible facility it was – a state of art facility for both the cows and the tourists!
They have their own ‘discovery’ centre for kids to play in as well as a 4D movie theatre, which plays a movie called ‘From Grass to Glass’, which was really funny.
We then went for a bus trip in a ‘COW’ bus, which took us through the whole grounds. The narrator told us about how the milking process works in here and how they look after so many cows.
We then went to a building where the actual milking process takes place and we watched cows hop on a ‘milking-go-around’ machine. They walk in and stay on it for 8 minutes during which time they get cleaned and milked. As they get to the end they reverse themselves and off they go back to their enclosures.
They live permanently in the building (they only look out at the green pastures around) but they get to move around freely in their building and choose any private stall they want. They also get fed 24/7, which I guess is a bonus.
The most amazing part of the whole trip however was being able to watch baby calves being born. We didn’t just watch one, but two little creatures come into this world.
They have a special viewing theatre were people can just come when they wish and sit there and watch birth taking place behind a glass or on a huge television. It was incredible! As they have over 80 calves being born every day, there is always a big chance one can be lucky enough to see a baby being born. And so we did! Not just one but two!
The first one popped out like a little bullet, but the second one took forever. In fact two midwifes had to pull the calf out by strapping its feet and pulling. The poor mummy cow looked like she was in a lot of pain. Most females in the audience were cringing their faces. And finally after an hour of struggling out popped out a 100-pound baby-cow (approx. 45kg). She was huge in comparison to the one born earlier. What an experience to watch this!
On the way out, daddy made a comment to mummy…. “Doesn’t this make you feel like having another baby?” Mummy just looked at daddy with a very serious face…. Daddy kept quite after that!
The dairy farm also had a huge playground for kids, which we gave us a decent workout. And what would be a diary farm without a delicious ice cream- we certainly had one of those as well!
In the late afternoon we ended up in a campground down the road called The Oak Lake. We decided to stay here for a couple of days to catch up on some schoolwork and just chill for a day or two (we’ve been packing our days with so much activity we needed to slow down). Besides, we need to gather some energy for our next destination – mighty CHICAGO!
The campground was fantastic; it had a jumping pillow, lay-down tricycles, a big lake where you could either go swimming or catch some fish.
Of course we did all of the above – especially when we met our new friends, Kya (6) and Eva (3) who within minutes of our arrival came to say hello and invited us over for s’mores that night.
We decided to nick-name our group ‘The Glamour Girls Club’ as the four of us certainly made a pretty picture (don’t you think?).
The next day, after we bid goodbye to the “Glamour Girls’ and their lovely parents Nick and Natalie (and enjoyed our final ice-cream together), we spent the rest of the day having fun on our inflatable boats.
The next morning we took full advantage of late check out. We got to sleep in and then we did some fishing (daddy and I caught 7 fish between us!).
As we started to contemplate whether to get going to Chicago or stay another night, we got an email from our ‘Glamour Girls’ friends, saying that if for any reason we had not left yet, to come over to their place (just 45 minutes up the road). How nice was that?
We thought for about 2 seconds and decided: heck, yeah!
So we packed up our little home on wheels and off we went to visit Nick, Natalie and the Glamour Girls from Indiana.
We had an awesome day with them! We arrived in the late afternoon and spent the rest of the day most of the night playing dress ups, and running around doing all sorts of kids stuff.
At night, after Natalie treated us to a yummy dinner, we watched some movies while the grown ups sat outside enjoying a bon fire and some nice music. Nick’s dad joined them for a while and then uncle ‘super-cop’ arrived with his family.
We are not going to mention his name here because he was totally cool and he let us play with his handcuffs, cop car and showed us his gun. I (Jordi) even got a lesson in how to properly hold a firearm and make sure it’s safe. It was thrilling. We were trying to persuade him to take us for a ride and he was keen to do it although he did mention that his rides are only a one way rides – straight to jail – so we decided to pass on that one, LOL. We wish we could have an uncle like that one!
We stayed overnight on our friends’ property and in the morning we were treated to the most delicious home-made cinnamon rolls that Natalie ‘whipped up’ for everyone to enjoy.
After a little play with the girls and a quick ‘photo shoot’, we once again had to ‘hit the road’. It was so nice to have this little detour and catch up with them!
***********************
We were supposed to be only 2 hrs from Chicago but boy did we choose the wrong day to drive across the town. As we didn’t leave our friend’s place till late morning AND we stopped in a nice candy factory to buy some sweets for our friends in Chicago (oh, yeah…and for us also), we hit the big traffic of Chicago. With Friday afternoon traffic and a few little accidents as well as trying to get through with our trailer – our 2hrs trip turned into 7hrs!
While we were travelling to Chicago we got in contact with Tony and Cheryl – you know, the lovely couple we met in Santa Fe?
Anyway, they told us to give them a call when we get there. As our campground was quite away from Chicago Downtown, our parents started contemplating leaving the trailer behind and organizing a hotel in the city so we could experience the real Chicago without the 3-hour trip each day.
When we spoke to Tony and Cheryl about it, Cheryl invited us over to stay at her apartment in the city instead of staying at the hotel. Tony also invited us over for dinner that night at his beautiful home just outside of Chicago.
So after some bug hunting at the RV park with my new friend Jocelynn and then spending leisurely day shopping at the outlets nearby, we went over to Tony’s place for finger-licking delicious BBQ ribs! Yummo!!! We also met Tony’s son Anthony and his grandpa. Also the neighbors from across the road, Dina and Brian joined us and before you knew it, we had a serious party going.
We ended up staying the night at Tony’s place, which was so nice after many, many nights in our camper. As comfortable as it is it is always great to be able to ‘de- camp’ oneself occasionally, especially in such beautiful home as Tony’s.
When Dina (the neighbor) found out we will be spending the nigh (which wasn’t really planned) she went over to her place got us some pajamas – she said it would be a great way for us to remember her – thanks Dina!
Tony even gave me a teddy bear to cuddle up to for the night.
The next day after we organized to have our trailer put into storage, we packed for a three-day trip to downtown Chicago. We initially wanted to stay in a hotel but Cheryl didn’t want to hear bout it- she kindly invited us to stay in her awesome apartment overlooking the city. It was incredible! And what initially started as a three-day trip ended up being a whole week jam packed with fabulous adventures. Everyday Cheryl came up with awesome things for us to do. She said she wanted us to see Chicago as she sees it everyday – a magnificent, clean, friendly, fun place to be, which hardly ever sleeps. And by golly- that’s EXACTLY how we saw it!
First of all, Cheryl, Tony and Tony’s 13 year old son Anthony (who by now we became very fond of) showed us how to us the public train system so that for days to follow we didn’t have to use our car but explore the town by train.
The first place we went to was the famous Wrigley Baseball Field, which is a home to Chicago Cubs. It was built in 1914 and it just happened that that day there was an interesting baseball game going on: Chicago Police vs Chicago Firefighters! How cool is that?
First, as they recognized a Policeman who recently died in a line of duty, they had big helicopters fly past with American Flags and then 100 Harley Davidsons, which surrounded the stadium turned on their engines. It was truly mesmerizing!
During the game, people do some crazy things to catch a ball when it gets over to the crowd. Below is a picture (downloaded from another game), which shows you a perfect example of such ‘behaviour’
This is probably why we got such an ovation when we came back from our ‘ball hunt’ both carrying a baseball in our little hands.
And no, we did not jump out of the balcony for those!
After many unsuccessful attempts to catch the falling ball, we just went down to the players and negotiated to get them. It took us a while but just like with our parents, eventually we wore them down, LOL.
Not sure if it was our strangely cute accents that did the trick or the fact that minutes before we were hanging out with this man below.
For those of you who haven’t got a clue, this is none other than the Mayor of Chicago, Emanuel Rahm, who we got a chance to meet.
Mummy already met the Big Boss, Barak Obama a while ago. She spoke to him for a quite a while in his office located in the Wax Museum in Las Vegas. She told him a lot of interesting things about Australia and about our Walkabout America trip and he seemed to listen with approval and concentration. They then both posed for some pictures taken by paparazzi.
We had dinner at a place, which ‘grandpa’ Sherwin from Santa Fe had highly recommended - Pizza Duo! The famous Chicago Deep Dish Pizza has certainly got our Thumbs UP! It was absolutely divine!!!! Daddy even packed up the left overs into a box and he insisted on having it for breakfast every morning we were in Chicago. “Grandpa’ Sherwin would’ve been proud!
The next morning Cheryl had to go to work but not before she handed us a detailed description of where to go and how to get there. With the list in hand we ‘hit the road’ on foot and then did some ‘train hopping’. Eventually we got to the Wrigley Building in the city and hopped on a City Architectural Boat Tour, where we spent 90 minutes marveling at the city from the river and also from the lake.
The lake and the river, as we had learned, are actually on different ‘levels’ (i.e. river is lower than the lake) hence the boat needed to go on a special ‘lift’, where they closed off a section and filled it in with more water before we could get onto the lake. It was a very clever way of controlling the water.
During our tour not only did we learn about all different architects who designed the skyscrapers, but we also learned that it was here that the steel frame was discovered and the first sky scraper in the world was built!
We also learned the answer to the mysterious nickname of Chicago – The Windy City. Everyone assumes that it was named that because of the weather. Nope! Chicago was named ‘The Windy City’ because of the timeframe the politicians take here to make a decision! They talk and they talk and they talk, and so they get a bit long winded! How funny!!!
After the tour we decided to do a lot of walking in the actual city. There is a big sculpture in Chicago called ‘The Bean’, which mummy really wanted to photograph. Essentially, it is massive chrome plated steel sculpture in a shape of a bean, which surprised us with phenomenal reflections of the city.
We stayed there for at least an hour checking it out from different angles – it is truly incredible!!!!
As we were hanging out at ‘The Bean’ we saw some kids with the American Doll bags. We didn’t realize this shop was here as well and so the ‘begging’ began: please, please, pretty please! Mummy and Daddy finally gave in but made us promise that we will only chose 1 outfit for the dolls we already have. After we agreed to it, they gave us another condition: we will walk all the way there (a lady told us we need to catch a bus as it was far away). We reluctantly agreed to the big walk and so we got to see the rest of the ‘Magnificent Mile’ shops and buildings.
Pretty hard to walk that far with ‘fuzzy eyes’ from the ‘Bean'
Or to simply admire musicians, with whom we had lengthy discussions, of course.
We also stopped a lot so mummy could take a bunch of pictures
We eventually made it to the American Doll shop, where we spent another hour mainly window-shopping. And what pretty windows they were!
Hey, check this out: the American Doll shop even has these neat handles in the bathrooms so you can sit your doll there when you go do….you know what! How clever is that???
At the shop we also met up with Cheryl who met us after work and together we walked all the way to the end of the street right to the beach!
There mummy, daddy and Cheryl had a drink (or two – but who is counting) and they set and watched us play in the sand. The beach is right next to the high-rises, right on Lake Michigan, which is so huge it could be mistaken for an ocean (the biggest lake in the world, which is surrounded by 1 country). And the best thing about this ‘ocean’?
We really like Chicago. Somehow it reminds us of Melbourne, where we live. Nice, clean, friendly. The beach where we spend the afternoon was just like our St Kilda (for those of you who know Melbourne).
The next morning we performed a ritual for Cheryl and our parents (which also got ‘televised’ for Tony and Anthony). We married Cheryl’s two toys Hank and Penny. The grownups thought it was hilarious!
The next day, while Cheryl was working, we went to check out Chicago Science Museum. Wow, it was so big! One could easily spend a day or two in here without seeing the same exhibit twice. Our favorite highlight would’ve been learning about Vortex, which is how tornado starts. In Australia we call it a ‘Willy-Willy’. The man who was telling us all about the vortex was very entertaining. He told us for example that the color of tornado would depend on what it is travelling over. If it is sand it’s travelling on, it will be orange or yellow but if it is travelling over a Hippy’s house it will probably be tie-dye color. How funny!
We learned a little bit more about static electricity. I even made a light come on a globe a lady was holding – it was so cool. The lady said I was a very bright girl!
But out of all technological, scientific, futuristic, space-age, innovative, hi-tech displays, the one which we enjoyed the most was…… watching little baby chicks hatch. Nothing like nature to capture child’s attention. We were literally glued to the window for what seemed like hours.
Mummy and daddy’s favorite room was the Mythbusters exhibition. We all got to try all different myths, which had been tested on television. We personally have never watched it (they don’t play it on kid channels) but after trying out a few experiments we REALLY liked it!
In the evening, Cheryl and Tony organized for us to go and have a picnic by the ocean (oops lake, LOL) to watch the sunset and see the skyline of Chicago by night. It was incredible!
While the grownups set by the lake drinking wine and having what we would call in Australia a ‘Happy Hour’, Anthony, Bella and I run around like monkeys, rolling in the grass and being crazy.
The next day Cheryl managed to take a day off and went with us Planetarium. It was a really fun day.
We got to upgrade our knowledge on the planets. Did you know that Earth could fit 1400 times into Jupiter?
We tried to sleep in the astronauts’ beds, which were just pillow backpacks attached to the wall. Wouldn’t it be fun to sleep in a real one for one night? At least we wouldn’t fall out of bed! Again!
Our highlight in the Planetarium however was one of the two 3D movies we watched: Welcome to the Solar System. It was absolutely jaw dropping! The seats in the cinema were almost lying down and the ceiling was a dome (seen here from the outside of the building). The movie was so realistic it wasn’t funny. We travelled through the space faster than the speed of light and a few times we had to shut our eyes from getting dizzy.
The movie taught us about the 1000s of millions of galaxies that are there and how we are just a ‘dust particle’ of one.
We have been to quite a few planetariums and star gazing museums and watched a few movies about planets already but never before had we felt so overwhelmed by the size of The Universe or by how little is known by the human kind. The movie was nothing short of breathtaking!
And here we were thinking that the Universe revolves around us! Oh, how disappointing! (LOL)
To make us feel like the ‘movie stars we are’ again Cheryl had an awesome surprise up her sleeve for us. She had spoken to one of her friends who owns a beautiful Sea Ray 65’ boat and asked him to take us out. After all it was Wednesday and every Wednesday (and Saturday) in Chicago is a night for …fireworks!
The night ended up absolutely fabulous! We met Cap’tn Tim on board his beautiful vessel and after fitting us with life jackets (it was a very windy night) we headed off onto the lake.
After a half an hour drive, we got to the ‘ Playpen’ – an area where all the rich and famous gather on Saturdays every summer. It is a protected area (from the wind and waves) and so they all throw they anchors overboard (sometimes even connecting the boats) and they have one massive party. The music flows and so does the champagne. And so we did exactly just that: we stopped and anchored the boat, put the music ON and ……...jumped off the boat into the beautiful (and quite warm) lake Michigan. Mummy and Cheryl stayed on board (someone had to look after the drinks – so that the wind didn’t blow them, LOL).
We then came back on the boat and watched the most beautiful fireworks. What a sensational night this turned out to be!
Our trip back on the boat was even more fun: dancing to the ‘Hotel California’ and the likes. We all had a ball! Captain Tim certainly knows how to entertain people!
While the grown ups were enjoying the beautiful view outside, we managed to convert a mighty expensive boat into a cubby house. Luckily Capt’n Tim didn’t mind at all.
Before we left we took a couple of photos with Capt’n Tim. He did his best impersonation of an ‘Aussie’ (with his hat). We think he did a really good job with that.
Before we left Capt’n Tim invited us as his guests to a private function at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago on Friday. As it happens Capt’n Tim donates quite a bit of money every year to the ‘Endangered Species’ foundation and so he gets some perks, like coming to the zoo function when the gates are closed to everybody else. Now, how could you say ‘No’ to an invitation like that?
On Thursday Cheryl found something really cool for us to do. Have you ever wondered what 44,000 rubber ducks look like in a…..river? Well, we never contemplated that idea either but once we learned that there is going to be a rubber duck race at the river – with 44,000 of them racing- we HAD to see it!
Every year the city of Chicago hosts the ‘Rubber Duck Derby’ to raise funds for Special Olympics. For a $5 fee one can adopt one of those groovy looking rubber ducks and after 44,000 are sold, off they go into a river. The winning duck wins a brand new car for its owner. How cool is that???
Once the rubber duckies hit the river, a man with a fire hydrant pushed them along. Everybody was cheering to encourage the ducks to make it to the finish line under the next bridge.
Unfortunately, like with any race, some of the athlets got left behind. A bunch of the ducks got stuck behind the boat. You could see them spinning around in panic and almost hear them saying to each other ‘Now What?’
During the race we met a really pretty girl. She looked like princess, with the crown and all. She told us she was Miss Ilanois.
No idea what that meant but she sure was pretty. She must’ve been important too because she gave us her picture and scribbled her name on it.
We should start carry those photo pads with us too. With our pictures on it, that is. Bella could call herself Miss Bella of Australia and I will be Miss Jordan of the Jungle. I think that would work. What do you think?
Cheryl joined us for the race and afterwards walked us to this Italian place Sherwin from Santa Fe recommended. He said they have the BEST Italian beef sandwiches in the United States. Even though it was a bit of a hike to get there, it certainly was worth the walk. The sandwiches were to ‘die for’. Thanks Sherwin for the recommendation, huge ‘THUMBS UP’ again!
Mummy even took this photo of the sign. She said she would check whether they deliver to ….Australia.
When we got back to Cheryl’s apartment that afternoon, Cheryl had ANOTHER surprise for us (I think we are going to start calling Cheryl: Santa Cheryl – a great complement indeed, not a lot of people get as high up on our list as Santa. Although with her beautiful figure she certainly does not look like Santa at all. Hmmm, maybe we will come up with a different nickname soon)….
Anyway, back to Cheryl’s place – she brought over her Giant teddy-bear of a dog from her friends place called Bogart. He was just the biggest, sweetest St Bernard we have ever seen! She also said that the girls (meaning Bella, Cheryl and I) will be having a slumber party that night and our parents are free to go out on a date.
‘Wow, hold your horses’ I said to mum ‘aren’t people supposed to go on a date BEFORE they get married???’
I was seriously concerned about that. In fact after they got ready and were almost at the door I wanted reassurance ‘does that mean you will get married to each other again when you get back?’
Mummy just smiled and said that if they were to do that again we sure could be the flower girls. A flower girl? Not a chance she will put a DRESS on me!Mummy and daddy ended up having a great night. They went to a beautiful classy restaurant Cheryl recommended (AND gave them voucher for) and then they went to a comedy club. They said later it was refreshing going to a restaurant where they don’t give you crayons with the menu! No idea why she would say that…I like crayons!
We meanwhile had a big party with Cheryl and Bogart. We applied lots of make up on Cheryl (Bogart wasn’t too crazy about the idea but he did settle for a grooming session). We also watched a movie together. We also took the time to write a lovely note to our parents, which we left out the door. It said ‘Dear Mummy and Daddy, hope you had a great date. Love, Jordan’. I was going to add ‘see you at the wedding’ but I am not sure how long that would take.
The next day after a decent sleep – in for everyone, we went to the zoo. We got there at about 2:30 pm and we got to look at different exhibits before the Charity Function.
We really liked the monkey enclosure. I recon if I were a monkey, this is where I would like to live (well, only if I had to be in the zoo of course).
Eventually at 6pm, the zoo closed and most of the people left. All, except for those who were invited to the charity event. It was so ace knowing that we had the whole zoo to ourselves! Fency being IN Chicago zoo after the gates have been shut! Yipeeee!
At the function they served yummy dinner (and unlimited ice-cream – too bad our parents only allowed us one!). Then all the kids were playing outside with bubble guns and then…we hopped on a carousel and went round and round and round as many times as we wished! Now that’s what you call a party!
Later in the evening we caught up with Capt’n Tim and some of his friends, including the man who organized the party. We stayed and chatted until one of the security guards came up and told us that everybody left and he needs to close up the zoo.LOL
As we were walking out Mummy asked ‘what if we could just hide and spend the night at the zoo?’ “Yeah!!!!!” we both replied but daddy didn’t think it was a good idea. He said ‘did you see that hungry lion before?’ ‘Oh, no!’ we promptly left the zoo!
We spent our last night driving around the city so that mummy could take some more pictures of Chicago at night.
And here is a fountain mummy says some of you would recognize from Al Bundies show: Married with Children.
And this last one is a picture of the whole city of Chicago at night. Mummy didn’t take this picture (just downloaded it*). Unfortunately we didn’t get time to get up in a chopper (helicopter not a body part -for you English readers). We just simply ran out of time!
The last night at Cheryl’s was a bit of paradox (bitter sweet). We had lots of fun with Cheryl as well as Tony and Anthony who came over for a visit but we were getting sad because we knew this would be our last night together! We got to really love Cheryl and Tony and Anthony (who, like any big brother would- taught us how to fart with hands and lips).

Hello! So fun to catch up on your adventure. Not sure if you remember us but we met you for a brief bit in Utah, Bryce Canyon. Jack and Maggie and I enjoyed the warm pool and late dinner out with you before tucking into our tent to keep warm during the chilly night.
ReplyDeleteWe are all settled into our new home in New Hampshire now, if you head this way we would love you to visit. (near Concord NH)
Cheers.
